Fall Home Maintenance

Get Your Home Properly Prepped For Winter!

Fall is officially here! Our goal is to protect YOU by making sure your home is properly prepped for winter – before it sneaks up on you. Taking care of these few things now will save you tons of hassle (and money) down the road.

Here is our hit list for keeping your home in top shape this fall.

· Gutter duty: I know, no one loves this one, but clearing out leaves and debris from your gutters and downspouts is crucial to avoid expensive water damage.

· Chimney check: If you have a wood-burning fireplace, now’s the time to call a chimney sweep. Clean out soot and creosote so you’re ready for those cozy fires.

· Windows matter: Clean those window tracks, sills, and screens, then lubricate the tracks to keep them moving smoothly through winter.

· Seal it up: Walk around your home and inspect all the caulking—windows, door sills, wood trim—anywhere water can get in. Re-caulk or paint as needed. It’s a quick fix with a big payoff.

· Show some love to your stained surfaces: Doors looking a little worn? Check stained doors and wood surfaces and reseal them to protect them from the elements.

· Get your lawn ready: A quick fall/winter fertilizer will make sure your lawn bounces back strong and green come spring.

· Winterize your hoses: Shut off hose bib valves, disconnect all hoses, and drain them. Trust me, frozen pipes are no fun come winter.

· Irrigation system: Shut down and drain your lawn irrigation system to avoid freeze damage.

· Fix your drainage game: Don’t let water sneak into your house. Check around the foundation for settled soil (especially under mulch beds) and fill in where needed. Extend those downspouts and sump pump lines to send water far from your foundation.

Taking care of these quick fixes now means you can enjoy a worry-free winter (and a cozy, comfortable home).
